Drama comprises bulk of Arabic TV production
Rebecca Hawkes ©RapidTVNews | 03-11-2011 Drama series comprise 78% of the Arabic television programming from the production hotspots of the Middle East and North Africa so far this year, according to new research from Arab Advisors Group.
For the first nine months of 2011, 46 series were produced in 26 production houses based in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the UAE.
Last year a total of 57 Arabic TV series were produced by the same companies, according to the new report, entitled 'TV series production houses in the Arab world'.
"Arab Advisors Group's analysis revealed that the majority of productions for 2010 and the first nine months of 2011 are of the drama genre, with 63% and 78% respectively. Comedy series followed with 26% in 2010 and 15% in 2011," said Zaid Abawi, research analyst, Arab Advisors Group.
Yasmine El Gharaibeh, another analyst at Arab Advisors Group, added: "Of the analysed production houses, Syria-based production houses were the most productive. Egypt-based houses followed."
