Leading Russian telco MTS has chosen SmartLabs as a provider of IPTV set-top boxes (STBs) for its soon to be launched Home TV interactive digital TV offering.
MTS claims to be the leading telecommunications group in Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia offering mobile and fixed voice, broadband, pay-TV as well as content and entertainment services. Emphasising that its decision was made as part of an open tender, MTS says that it picked the SmartLabs SML-292 devices as they fully meet the requirements in terms of functionality, reliability and quality. The deal comes only months after SmartLabs implemented a contract for the supply to MTS of its SML-282IPTV STBs.

The boxes supports full HD (1920x1080) IPTV services and also enable enhanced connectivity of external devices via two USB ports, optical SPDIF, HDMI with HDCP, and other interfaces and are also fully compatible with HDTV and 3D TVs and projectors. The SML-292 Premium also has an embedded hard drive to enable value-added services such as Local PVR, push VOD and pause/live TV.
Significantly and perhaps somewhat far-sightedly given the current trends in the industry, the devices also support adaptive streaming technology in order to make them compatible with over
the top (OTT) video solutions.
