German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland has won 98,000 new subscribers in Q3 2011. The growth was twice as big as in Q3 2010 in which 45,000 new customers were recorded.
Sky's total subscriber number now amounts to 2.86 million. One year ago, it was 2.52 million. In Q4 2011, the Munich-based broadcaster expects to acquire around 100,000 new customers. By the end of the year, the total subscriber figure would then remain slightly under the 3 million mark required to reach financial break-even, according to earlier statements.
Turnover rose in Q3 2011 by 17% to €284.5 million while the loss was reduced. The net loss amounted to €46.9 million after €89.3 million in Q3 2010.
The number of Sky Premium HD customers climbed in Q3 2011 by 103,000 to a total of 818,000 (Q3 2010: 460,000). HD penetration thereby grew to 28,6% (Q3 2010: 18.2%). Including the HD reach of basic package "Sky Welt", the total number of Sky HD customers now amounts to more than 1.4 million.
With the latest additions Fox HD and NatGeo Wild HD Sky now offers over 40 HD channels. The line-up will be constantly expanded, according to the broadcaster. On 1 December 2011, sports news channel Sky Sport News HD will launch.
