YouTube launches its first original programming channel
Michelle Clancy ©RapidTVNews | 14-11-2011 The first YouTube channel for original programming has launched, and it’s targeted to the Hispanic population.
Clevver Media’s ClevverTeVe Spanish-language news and entertainment channel is the first of the nearly 100 premium channels that YouTube has planned, from a variety of content providers that include celebrity developers like Jay-Z, Madonna, Tony Hawk and Ashton Kutcher, and trusted media names like the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
Two more channels, the English-language ClevverNews and ClevverStyle, will soon follow.
"The YouTube original channels initiative will also enable us to expand our international reach," Clevver co-founder Jorge Maldonado said, in a statement. "Our new ClevverTeVe channel is designed to tap into the rapidly growing Latino market, hungry for high quality and up-to-date entertainment news content."
Clevver offers ClevverTV, ClevverMovies, ClevverMusic and ClevverGames on YouTube already, but the new channels will be part of a premium gambit that YouTube is putting together to grab a piece of the growing TV-streaming market that Netflix, Hulu and Amazon have dominated so far.
"Our goal with this channels expansion... is to bring an even broader range of entertainment to YouTube, giving you more reasons to keep coming back again and again,” Google write in its TouTube blog in announcing the initiative.
YouTube has pledged to invest $100 million in original content, with channels rolling out over the course of the next few months
