Hong Kong's ATV fined over false report of Jiang Zemin death
Louise Duffy ©RapidTVNews | 06-12-2011 Hong Kong television station Asia Television Ltd (ATV) has been fined HK$300,000 for mistakenly reporting the death of former Chinese president Jiang Zemin.
In its report on the incident, the Hong Kong Broadcasting Authority said the broadcaster had failed to ensure the accuracy of reports on 6 July of the ex-leader's death, and that its approach to the subsequent inquiry was irresponsible.
"The BA has found the complaints against inaccurate news reporting and late correction of factual errors substantiated. The BA regrets that ATV has adopted an irresponsible approach in its response to BA's inquiry," it said in a statement on its website.
Jiang, 85, is in frail health, and rarely makes public appearances.
