Al Jazeera English has snagged a new carriage deal, with MTS Classic and Ultimate TV subscribers in Manitoba, Canada.
Demand for the channel has grown steadily in North America and Al Jazeera English saw a 2,500% increase in its web traffic during its coverage of the Arab Spring, with the majority of the traffic coming from North America. That said the news channel of the Arabian world has been famously shut out of pay-TV channel line-ups in North America and is available only on Time Warner Cable in NYC and on PBS in Chicago. It is though making headway in Canada in particular and recently launched on TELUS and is available to Bell, Rogers, Cogeco, Shaw Cable, Videotron and CCSA member cable system subscribers throughout the country.
Al Jazeera’s bureau in Toronto has reported on stories ranging from the Canadian elections to the effects of Agent Orange in Ontario to the struggle for the conservation of Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. MTS TV subscribers can watch through the Information Theme group on channel 148.
“Subscribers to MTS TV service now have 24/7 access to Al Jazeera English’s unprecedented global coverage,” said Kimeran Daley, head of distribution for Al Jazeera in the Americas. “We know Canadians have a keen interest in international news and we’re excited to be bringing viewers in Manitoba in depth, investigative coverage from both inside Canada and from around the world."
