Microsoft beefs up content for Zune streaming service on Xbox
Michelle Clancy ©RapidTVNews | 23-12-2011 In an effort to bolster content for its own over the top (OTT) video streaming service, Microsoft will release films from the Image Entertainment library for its Zune Video Marketplace, across multiple platforms.
Titles to be transmitted across devices such as the Xbox LIVE, Windows-based PCs and Windows Phone include Peter Weir's The Way Back, Gun starring Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and The Resident featuring Hilary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, will be available through Zune Video Marketplace.
"Image Entertainment is a leading supplier of films, filmed music and stand-up comedy to the digital market," said John Hyde, vice chairman for Image. "We are excited to have Zune as an additional way for our customers to enjoy the home digital experience."
Zune is available on Xbox LIVE using voice and gestures with Kinect for Xbox 360. Users can control their Zune entertainment (including making a selection, play, and pause and fast-forward a movie, TV show or song) with their voice or a wave of their hand.
Image, an independent licensee and distributor of entertainment programming in North America, offers about 3,200 exclusive DVD titles and approximately 340 exclusive CD titles in domestic release and more than 450 programs internationally via sublicense agreements.
Microsoft has been working hard to make its Xbox gaming console a destination for streaming video. It recently added VUDU to its roster, joining customers of Netflix, Verizon FiOS, Comcast, HBO GO and more who can sign in via their pay credentials and use the Xbox as a set-top.
