Mob series Lilyhammer, exclusively on Netflix
Juan Pablo Conti ©RapidTVNews | 04-01-2012 Online video firm Netflix is about to enter a brave new world in which OTT companies not only strive to have as many of the most popular films and TV series available to viewers but also look to release content exclusively.
The first step in this new direction will be officially taken by Netflix on February 6. That day, the American, Canadian and Latin American subscribers of the company will be able to watch before everybody else Lilyhammer, a series starring The Sopranos actor and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt.
Produced in Norway by Rubicon TV AS, the series' opening season is made up of eight episodes of one hour each. In a sign of the times in terms of televisual consumption patterns, all eight episodes will be simultaneously released and available on the OTT platform from day one.
"If you love the first episode, there is no need to wait until next week, or to set a DVR, to catch the next one," said Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer.
In a character reminiscent of his role in The Sopranos, Van Zandt plays a New York gangster who, through the US government's witness protection programme, suddenly finds himself having to adjust to a new life in Lillehammer, Norway – a place as alien as full of opportunities to an incorrigible gangster like him.
