The Zuku pay-TV service launched by the Wananchi Group five months ago in Nairobi has now registered over 35,000 subscribers across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The group's chief executive Richard Bell said he is delighted with the uptake of Zuku TV so far, and this year plans to roll the service out to eight more countries across Africa – namely in Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti, Malawi and Somalia.
Zuku TV offers a variety of entertainment, news, film, documentary and music channels. These vary from its own Zuku Africa channel with African content, Zuku Life documentaries, Zuku Sports and themed movie channels to popular western broadcasters such as the BBC and MTV. It also carries Hollywood entertainment and news in the form of MGM Movies and E!
Wananchi Group Holdings says it has invested over 14 billion Kenyan Shillings over the past three years to build its triple play business, which comprises pay TV, broadband internet and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services.
