DIRECTV n3D™ Film Invitational, Presented by Panasonic
n3D™, the 3D channel available exclusively on DIRECTV, is on a quest to find the next 3D filmmaker with the 2011 DIRECTV n3D™ Film Invitational, Presented by Panasonic.
In April, 18 up-and-coming filmmakers were invited to pitch their creative concepts for a 3D short film before a panel of distinguished film and television experts. Those 18 filmmakers were whittled down to six finalists.
Each of the six finalists was loaned a Panasonic 3D camera and equipment and was provided with Panasonic’s 3D camera training and Technicolor’s 3D Master Class. Each filmmaker was also given a $10,000 production budget to create their short film.
At a special event on July 20th in Beverly Hills, California, DIRECTV will screen the films and announce the winner of the n3D™ Excellence Award. The winning filmmaker will receive $25,000. Additionally, Technicolor will announce the recipient of the Technicolor 3D Technical Achievement Award worth $5,000.
The films will air on n3D™ in the Fall.
Meet the Six Finalists in the DIRECTV n3D™ Film Invitational, Presented by Panasonic
An emerging multi-talented director, producer, editor, and writer, Ambika has her own production company, On Purpose Pictures. She has also developed projects over the last 3 years with two-time Academy-Award-winning producer Mark R. Harris. Ambika will showcase her 3D short, Fetch, an action/comedy featuring dueling apprentices, a trickster magician, and a high-speed race for a latte.
Levi directed his first short film in 2002, which was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. In the past five years, he has made dozens of award-winning short films and music videos, as well as a documentary about the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans produced by Sean Penn. Levi will present the 3D family drama,Nickel Ride, which follows two grandsons who must come to grips with the fact that their grandfather is dying, and are determined to give him one last adventure.
Kevin has produced and directed several award-winning documentaries and short films, including 25th Annual Salute to the Dodgers: Then and Now. Before that, he had writing assignments at MTV Films, Nickelodeon, Big Ticket Television, and Paramount Television’s 7th Heaven. Kevin will showcase the 3D short, Super Temps, an action/comedy about a shy, introverted man who overcomes his fears to get the girl of his dreams.DIRECTV offers more 3D programming than any other television provider in the country. n3D™, powered by Panasonic, (Ch. 103) is now available at no additional cost to millions of DIRECTV HD customers. Martin is a feature film and television writer, director, and producer, as well as a founding partner of Booya Studios. As a member of the Directors Guild of America and Writers Guild of America, he has directed films such as Campfire Tales and Rogue. Martin will feature the 3D short, Ripper, a steampunk take on Victorian England, where following the murder of her sister by Jack the Ripper, a young woman secretly hunts down and kills the infamous serial killer.
Monica directed the short film, You Kill Me. It recently played in the Belgrade International Film Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival. In addition to her work as a director, she has produced a documentary and been a cinematographer on numerous short films. Monica will present the 3D short, The Boy and the Officer, a dramatic film set during WWII that navigates questions of morality and survival through the eyes of a child and a German officer.
Vanessa is an award-winning writer, director, and editor. She has edited documentaries that have aired on PBS, NBC, and Bravo, and has also edited independent features and many short films, including the Emmy-nominated film Sway. Vanessa will feature the 3D short, Hazelwood, a wacky horror/comedy about a genetically altered lab rat that is accidentally let out of its cage.
