Adebayor: Boosted the Spurs title push

    REDKNAPP WARNING FOR ADEBAYOR

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp concedes Emmanuel Adebayor will have to take a huge pay-cut if he is to stay at White Hart Lane next season.
Adebayor has played a key role in helping Tottenham turn around their season. Since he signed on loan from Manchester City, the Londoners have lost just once and they can move level with Adebayor's parent club at the top of the Barclays Premier League if they beat Wolves at White Hart Lane.
Adebayor has struck up a good understanding with Rafael van der Vaart to keep top goalscorer Jermain Defoe out of the team and the Togo striker is keen to make his move to north London permanent.
Spurs' top earners are thought to be on roughly 70,000 a week - about a third of what Adebayor receives at the Etihad Stadium, and Redknapp summed up the gulf in spending power between the two clubs this afternoon by saying: "He has done well for us. He has worked hard but he is on amazing money.
"The other week, one of the lads told him that he had not paid his 50 fine for being the worst player in training on a Friday morning. One of the lads said to him: 'Bloody hell, Ade, you are on 200 grand a week and you can't afford to pay a 50 fine!' He replied: 'Don't insult me, it's 225!'"
The laughter that followed the anecdote was followed up by a serious message from Redknapp, who admitted: "He certainly isn't getting that here."
Redknapp went on to admit that Tottenham's strict wage structure means he faces a tough battle to keep many of his stars at White Hart Lane despite the club being in with a serious chance of winning their first title in 51 years this term.
"Players play for a club and they enjoy being there, but if someone comes along and offers them a contract that could blow their current one out of the water, then you've got a problem," he said.
"I'd be talking rubbish if I said people wanted to stay at Tottenham just because we're playing good football. I'd be dreaming. If you want to keep the best players, we have to find a way of doing a deal that's near to what they can earn elsewhere, otherwise it will be a problem.
"If you're a top player and someone wants to give you a fantastic contract, it's very hard to hang on to them."
Spurs' resurgence started when they Adebayor scored on his debut to help the club beat Wolves 2-0 at Molineux in September.
Since then Redknapp's men have lost just once and have only drawn three times in their following 17 games.
Another key reason behind the club's surge up the table has been Redknapp's ability to stick with the same team.
That policy has led to grumblings of discontent among the club's fringe players, with the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Niko Kranjcar, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Steven Pienaar and Jermain Defoe all desperate for more game time.
Defoe is the club's top scorer with 11 goals but has started just seven league games. A representative of the England striker has been complaining about his client's lack of starts, Redknapp revealed today, but the Spurs boss insists he will not be letting the player leave.
Redknapp added: "(Chairman) Daniel (Levy) spoke to his agent and he said he (Defoe) is not happy because he wants to play and he has got a few clubs in for him. I'm sure he has got a few clubs in for him but we are not selling him. He is a big player for us.
"He is a good lad. I have taken him everywhere and get on great with him. He gets disappointed but there is every chance he will play tomorrow."
QPR bid for Pienaar yesterday but it was rejected and Redknapp does not want to let the midfielder leave either.
"Steven is a good player. I wouldn't want to sell him," Redknapp said.
Redknapp could again be without Scott Parker, who missed Wednesday's win over Everton with a knee injury, for tomorrow's match.
However, there was some good news from the treatment room regarding Tom Huddlestone, who has returned to light training after recovering from an ankle injury that has sidelined him since August.
"Tom Huddlestone trained today for the first time in months," Redknapp said.
"That's good for him, it has been so sad for him. He is a fantastic footballer."

Gary Cahill: Set for Stamford Bridge switch

    CAHILL CLOSE TO CHELSEA SWITCH

Gary Cahill is due to undergo a medical at Chelsea today with a view to completing his move from Bolton over the weekend, it is understood.
The England defender was in London overnight and looks set to end two weeks of uncertainty over his future by joining the Blues.
It is more than a fortnight since Bolton accepted a 7million bid from Chelsea for their prize asset, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Negotiations initially looked to have hit a snag when Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed club and player were "miles apart" in terms of Cahill's salary.
Reports suggested Cahill was looking for 100,000 a week, with Chelsea hoping to settle for something closer to 70,000.
The club are looking to reduce their overall wage bill due to the Financial Fair Play regulations but the two parties now appear to have come to a satisfactory conclusion.
Speaking yesterday, Villas-Boas appeared confident of a positive outcome "this week" and refused to criticise Cahill or his representatives for the delay.
"It's part of negotiation," Villas-Boas said.
"I'm sure all parties are protecting their interests and we'll reach an agreement."
Cahill, 26, would be Villas-Boas' first January signing, bolstering the problematic central defensive area.
QPR target Alex is out of favour and has not been considered for first-team action since being made available for transfer and Branislav Ivanovic has been injured, while both David Luiz and John Terry have been short of their best this season.

Alex: Subject of an improved offer

    QPR LODGE IMPROVED ALEX BID

Sky Sports sources understand QPR have tabled an improved offer for Chelsea defender Alex after seeing their first bid spurned earlier this week.
Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas confirmed on Thursday the club had received an offer from a Premier League rival for the defender and implied the bid fell short of their valuation.
QPR are believed to be the club chasing Alex after new manager Mark Hughes set his sights on the Brazilian.
And it is thought the Hoops have now lodged a second bid as they push to make their first signing under Hughes.
Centre-back Alex wants to depart Stamford Bridge this month and saw a transfer request accepted by the club in December.
He no longer features in Villas-Boas' plans, with Chelsea closing on the signing of Bolton stopper Gary Cahill.

    Steven Pienaar: QPR target

    SPURS 'REJECT QPR PIENAAR OFFER'

Tottenham have rejected an offer from QPR for midfielder Steven Pienaar, Press Association Sport understands.
The winger joined Spurs from Everton a year ago but has failed to break in to the first team, partly due to a series of injuries.
It is understood new Rangers boss Mark Hughes made a bid for the South African, but it was rejected and Spurs do not want to let the 29-year-old go.
Pienaar has started just five league games for Spurs since moving to White Hart Lane from Everton, where he was a fans' favourite.
He has been linked with a return to Goodison Park on loan for the rest of the season and Aston Villa have also been mentioned as possible suitors.
But, mindful that he needs a big squad to maintain his team's Barclays Premier League title challenge, manager Harry Redknapp does not want to see the versatile midfielder leave.
"I wouldn't want to let him go. He is a good player," Redknapp said.
"I brought him on for the last 10 minutes against Everton on Wednesday and he didn't give the ball away.
"I don't have any need to weaken the squad. I would rather have a good squad for last 18 matches of the season than let one or two go who could play a part in the run-in."
Pienaar's Spurs career started promisingly, with the South African slotting in to the team after an injury to Gareth Bale last season.
He started the Londoners' Champions League second-round game at AC Milan but a series of injuries meant he saw less first-team action.
He suffered a concussion after clashing heads with team-mate Bongani Khumalo in February and picked up a niggling groin problem towards the end of last season.
He was confident the problem had gone away, but it flared up again in pre-season and he had to undergo surgery as a result, ruling him out until mid-September before another two setbacks kept him sidelined until November and he has struggled to make an impact since.

Paul Scholes: Surprise return to Manchester United

    FERGUSON DEFENDS SCHOLES RETURN

Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected the suggestion that Paul Scholes' Manchester United return is a step backwards.
The United manager sprang a major surprise when he confirmed Scholes had come out of retirement ahead of the FA Cup tie at Manchester City last Sunday.
Ferguson had not even told his players, so determined was he for the news not to leak out prematurely.
Yet, once the shock had subsided, many began to question why United needed the services of a 37-year-old and Friday's departure of Darron Gibson to Everton has brought yet more claims that books are being balanced at Old Trafford.
"There were no negatives as far as I was concerned," Ferguson said in a joint interview with Eurosport and www.yahoo.com, carried out in conjunction with the League Managers' Association.
"One or two people have been negative. They're making out it's been a 'regressive step' for Manchester United.
"How can it be regressive? You're getting a player for nothing who's been part of the club for 20-odd years.
"He's not going to play every game but in terms of composure and passing ability, is there a better player going around? Definitely not."
Once the decision was made, Ferguson's biggest dilemma was ensuring the news did not leak out, not even inside his own dressing room.
"I don't know how we managed it," he said.
"We registered him on the Friday, and thought somehow it would get out. But we didn't let any of the players know simply because of the impact value.
"We were going away from home in a very difficult FA Cup tie against City. We had 5,000 fans at that end of the ground and as soon as they knew his name was on the team sheet they were fantastic, there was a great response."
Ferguson has always reflected on the fact Scholes is one of the easiest players he has ever had to manage.
The demands are getting harder though as star names become wealthier and surrounded by an increasing number of agents and assistants to cater for their every whim.
"What you have to do is (ensure your players) understand how fragile that celebrity status can be," said Ferguson.
"One minute you're a star, the next minute you're not.
"Dealing with success is a bit more difficult today, because of television and the headlines they can get. So you do a lot of work with them to keep their feet on the ground.
"I say to them all the time: 'Go back to your mother the same person you were when you arrived. That's important, because I'm sure your mother doesn't like to see you change'. And we don't like to see them change either."
It is the template Ferguson likes to see followed, which is why he takes such pride in the success of old players when they enter the management game.
The latest is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who ended his first season at Molde by steering the club to a memorable Norwegian title triumph.
"Ole was one of these professionals who used to take down all the notes of the training sessions and games," said Ferguson.
"The problem for footballers today is that when they get to the end of their careers they decide to become coaches because there's nothing else in their mind that they think they can do.
"Whereas Ole always wanted to stay in the game so from an early age his preparation was (with a view to that).
"He's got an inner toughness, no doubt about that. Ole is a nice one. He's got a lovely manner about him.
"But if you go to a club like that (Molde) in Norway that has never won the league in their history and you win the league, you have to have something about you to do that."

Carlos Tevez: AC Milan talks broke down

    PLATT: STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED

Manchester City first-team coach David Platt says "stranger things have happened" than Carlos Tevez playing for the club again.
AC Milan have been in talks over signing the out-of-favour Argentina striker during the winter transfer window.
But negotiations were put on hold on Thursday after Milan frontman Alexandre Pato turned down a move to French side Paris St Germain.
Milan are hoping talks can be revived, while rivals Inter Milan have also been linked with a move for Tevez.
But Platt has raised the possibility of the 27-year-old, who scored 53 goals in his first two seasons with City, playing for the Blues again.
"Stranger things have happened," he said.
Tevez, who joined City in the summer of 2009, has not played for the Blues since the Carling Cup win over Birmingham at the end of September.
He was then frozen out after his now infamous refusal to resume a warm-up as a substitute against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
Tevez was consequently the subject of an internal disciplinary process and City manager Roberto Mancini has since been keen for the striker to leave the club.

    Westley: Joins Deepdale staff

    WESTLEY CONFIRMED AS PRESTON BOSS

Graham Westley has been appointed as the new manager of Preston.
The npower League One club confirmed the 43-year-old as successor to Phil Brown on Saturday after agreeing a compensation package with Westley's previous employers Stevenage.
Westley guided Stevenage from the Blue Square Bet Premier to League One courtesy of back-to-back promotions, and also masterminded the FA Cup giant-killing of Newcastle last year.
Another surprise FA Cup win over Championship side Reading last weekend proved to be the final game of Westley's second spell in charge of Stevenage.
He managed them between 2003 and 2006 before returning in 2008 to guide the Hertfordshire club to FA Trophy success and into the Football League for the first time.
He will be joined at Deepdale by assistant John Dreyer and first-team coach Dino Maamria, having agreed rolling contracts to replace Brown who was sacked in mid-December following a goalless draw with Stevenage.
"It is a privilege to be handed the reins at this historic football club," Westley told the club's official website.
"When you see images of men like Sir Tom Finney, Alan Kelly and Bill Shankly looking back at you from the stands at Deepdale, you get a very clear sense of the responsibilities that you are accepting.
"My job is to do my very best to re-ignite the club's on-field performance and in the first instance help the club to punch at its weight. We will take things on from there."

Alex: Set for switch down the road

    QPR 'AGREE ALEX FEE'

QPR today agreed a fee with Chelsea to take defender Alex to Loftus Road, Press Association Sport understands.
Rangers had a bid turned down for the wantaway Brazilian earlier in the week but have now reached a consensus with their west London rivals.
They must now convince the 29-year-old to become Mark Hughes' first signing as manager, amid reports he may no longer wish to remain in England.
Chelsea accepted QPR's offer less than 24 hours after Gary Cahill travelled to London to complete the formalities of his move from Bolton.
Alex, who has also been linked with Paris St Germain and Juventus, was banished from the Blues' first-team squad in November after submitting a transfer request.
His signing would represent another coup for ambitious Rangers after they convinced Hughes to succeed Neil Warnock as manager on Tuesday.
As well as having a previous bid for Alex snubbed - reportedly 3million - they have had offers turned down for Andy Johnson, Christopher Samba, and yesterday Steven Pienaar.
Should Rangers complete Alex's signing, he will have to wait to make his debut as the club missed the deadline for tomorrow's Barclays Premier League game at Newcastle, while he is ineligible for Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay against MK Dons.
His first game would therefore be next Saturday's league match against Wigan, which is followed by a possible FA Cup clash with Chelsea.

    Gary Hooper: Bid rejected

    HOOPER GOING NOWHERE - LENNON

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has rejected a second offer from Southampton for striker Gary Hooper.
Saints boss Nigel Adkins wants to sign the player he sold to the Parkhead club for around 2million in 2010 when he was at Scunthorpe.
However, Lennon is keen to keep Hooper as he bids to win the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title back from Old Firm rivals Rangers.
"There has been another enquiry for Hooper this week," the Irishman was quoted as saying by a number of newspapers.
"But the valuation of that club and our valuation is some way off.
"I've no idea if Southampton will come back in. But they will get the same answer - that he's not for sale.
"Goalscorers are priceless. If you look at Gary's record in his time here, he's got a goal in every one-and-a-half games.
"He was one of the leading scorers in the Championship. When I went to see him he stood out like a sore thumb.
"I think it's been good business and he's enjoying life here and enjoying his football."

Mark Hughes: New man at Loftus Road

    NO GUARANTEES FOR HUGHES

QPR have refused to guarantee Mark Hughes will not be sacked if the club are relegated from the Barclays Premier League.
New manager Hughes pledged his long-term future to Rangers at his unveiling on Wednesday, insisting he had no intention of reneging on his two-and-a-half-year contract, even if the worst happened.
But QPR chief executive Philip Beard declined to give a cast-iron assurance the club would reciprocate.
Asked if they would stick with Hughes should Rangers fail to survive this season, Beard said: "Every football club - and there are probably 12 or 13 of them - have got to contemplate what happens if they don't perform as well as they need to on the pitch.
"That doesn't mean our shareholders go away and we pack up our bags and don't implement what we've been talking about.
"The aim is that Mark is here for a very long time and sees through the objectives and the aims.
"I'm a small cog in the wheel but I came here because I believe that the shareholders have got a vision that they want to implement. My job is to try to do that off the pitch and I hope we've found the manager - the right person - to come and do it for us on the pitch."
Pressed further on whether Hughes would definitely be in charge next season, come what may, Beard added: "I hope so.
"As far as I'm concerned, Mark is here now to help us fulfil both on the pitch what we want to achieve and help me with his expertise and his team implementing a training ground we can be proud of for the club."
Rangers sacked Neil Warnock on Sunday after they slumped to within a point of the relegation zone and Beard confirmed they had plans in place should they suffer an immediate return to the npower Championship.
"My job is to make sure that the business can be effective for the medium and long-term," he said.
"I look at business plans all the time and contingency plans going forward.
"I hope what we've done over the last couple of days means that I don't have to get those numbers out.
"But I'd be crazy to say that I haven't even thought about what we'd be doing if we didn't stay in the Premier League."
