Cardinals get two first-period goals, hold on to down Tigers

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Morgan MacInnis had a three-point afternoon to lead No. 8 Plattsburgh State to a 3-1 win against top-ranked Rochester Institute. With the win, the Cardinals hand the Tigers their first loss of the season and claim the top spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Division.
Two first-period goals gave the Cardinals the edge early on in the game. MacInnis scored her sixth of the year and first of the night at the 8:04 mark of the opening stanza. MacInnis picked up a puck that deflected off a Rochester Institute defender and found the back of the net. Shannon Stewart assisted on the goal.

With 1:32 left in the first, Stewart beat the Tigers’ goaltender Laura Chamberlain on the right side to give Plattsburgh (10-3-2, 8-0-2 ECAC West) a 2-0 lead. MacInnis and Teal Gove set up Stewart’s fifth of the year.
The two teams played a scoreless second before Kristina Moss broke through for Rochester Institute (14-1-1, 8-1-1 ECAC West) at the 12:32 mark of the third period. Moss fired a slapshot from the point past Plattsburgh goalie Sydney Aveson. Morgan Scoyne picked up an assist on the lone goal for the Tigers.
Plattsburgh regained a two-goal lead with 33 seconds in the game as MacInnis tallied her second of the night. Chamberlain stopped the initial shot off Gove’s breakaway but MacInnis was there to bang in the rebound to put the Cardinals up 3-1.
Rochester Institute went 0-for-5 on the power play while Plattsburgh was 0-for-2 with the extra skater. The Cardinals finished the night with 40 shots on goal. The Tigers had 35 shots, including 14 in the final 20:00.
Aveson improves to 9-2-1 after making 34 saves. Chamberlain recorded 37 saved and falls to 8-1-1.
