Wayne Bridge: Looks set for Sunderland move

    BRIDGE SET FOR SUNDERLAND MEDICAL

Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge was on his way to Wearside this morning as he closed in on a loan move to Sunderland.
Press Association Sport understands the 31-year-old former England international was due to undergo a medical as
Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill attempts to bolster his injury-hit squad on the final day of the January transfer window.
O'Neill moved for the hugely experienced left-back after his defensive resources were further stretched by the loss of Wes Brown to a suspected medial ligament injury at the weekend.
Bridge has played just 78 minutes of senior football this season after slipping down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.
His only appearance of the campaign to date came in a 2-0 Carling Cup third-round victory over Birmingham on September 21.
Bridge joined City from Chelsea in a 12million move in January 2009, but has managed only 58 appearances in his three years with the club.
He began his career with home-town club Southampton and hit the big time when he was snapped up by Chelsea in a 7million deal in July 2003.
Bridge, who has 30 senior England caps, would fill a position which has been vacant for some time at the Stadium of Light.
Either right-back Phil Bardsley or midfielder Kieran Richardson have more often than not played on the left side of defence for the last two seasons.
O'Neill's predecessor Steve Bruce chased Wigan's Maynor Figueroa for much of his time at the club, but was never able to plug the gap with a specialist.
It is understood npower Championship Reading had more than a passing interest in Bridge, but the offer of Barclays Premier League football appears to have eased Sunderland ahead of the Royals.

Ravel Morrison: Set for West Ham switch

REPORT: MORRISON SET FOR WEST HAM

Sky Sports sources understand Manchester United teenager Ravel Morrison is closing in on a move to Championship leaders West Ham United.
Morrison is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and it appears the Premier League champions have accepted an offer from the Hammers.
The Red Devils rejected a bid from Newcastle United earlier in the transfer window after Sir Alex Ferguson stated that Morrison had rejected a new deal.
The 18-year-old subsequently took to Twitter to insist he had not turned down an extension, but the midfielder now looks to be on his way out of United.
He is regarded as the most gifted youngster to have come through the United ranks for many years, but has also encountered problems off the pitch.
The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Roma and Paris St Germain have all been linked with moves for Morrison, but West Ham appears his destination.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is preparing for a busy deadline day after lining up deals for Barnsley striker Ricardo Vaz Te and Genoa forward Ze Eduardo.

    Andy Carroll: Swap talk rejected

    ROBERTO MANCINI REJECTS SWAP TALK

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini insists he has not spoken to Liverpool regarding a potential swap deal involving Andy Carroll and Carlos Tevez.
Speculation in recent days has claimed that Liverpool contacted City's football administrator Brian Marwood last week to discuss a potential exchange between the two players before the transfer window closed.
City are understood to have rejected the approach and Mancini says he has not discussed the matter with Marwood as the Premier League leaders continue their efforts to offload Tevez.
"I never heard of this," said Mancini at a press conference on Monday.
"Carroll is a good player, he is young and strong but it would be difficult and I don't think [it is going to happen].
"There was no phone call to me. I don't know if Brian Marwood was involved. I just read it in the newspaper. I didn't speak to Marwood about this.
"My opinion about Carlos is that it is important he finds a good solution because he can stay for a year without playing. It is important that he plays, he is a top player.
"At the moment no, because we have not talked about this with Liverpool. This is a new one for me."
Carroll has struggled for form since his 35million move to Anfield from Newcastle United 12 months ago and reports have claimed that Liverpool's approach to City was made without his or his representative's knowledge.
The England international has insisted he is committed to the club and Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is adamant there are no issues with the player.
Dalglish said: "We don't have any problem with any of our players because nobody is going anywhere.
"Just read what Andy said this morning. He said he's very happy here. He doesn't regret coming here. That's the best reference you can get."
Regarding the speculation, Dalglish added: "We don't need to comment. We've said what's going to happen and it's nothing, so that's us.
"We don't need to get involved to justify what people have said. Ask them to justify it, not us.
"I am not talking about any specific incident but if you are going to do business in any way, shape or form in whatever life it's in, you don't disclose it until it's done, do you?
"As we've said before, and [the chairman] Tom Werner said, there's no point letting the facts interfere with a good story. They said we bought Stewart Downing off YouTube. Do me a favour."

Marcus Olsson: Happy with Blackburn switch

    MARCUS OLSSON: I'VE JOINED BLACKBURN

Blackburn have completed the signing of Martin Olsson's twin brother Marcus, according to the player himself.
Olsson, like his brother, is a full Sweden international and is also left sided, although he can also play up front.
Now the 23-year-old has told the Swedish press that he has completed a move to Blackburn after his contract with Halmstads expired.
"It feels great, I tried not to think about it too much before it was confirmed, but I signed today and can finally take a breather," Olsson told Hallandsposten.
His agent claims he rejected a move to Italy to join Rovers.
"Two clubs in Serie A and Standard Liege wanted him, but for Marcus it was a dream to play in the Premier League and even more so with his brother," Hasan Cetinkaya told Aftonbladet.

Steve Cotterill: Confirms Chelsea want Bamford

    CHELSEA BID FOR PATRICK BAMFORD

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cotterill has confirmed Chelsea have made a 1.5million bid for teenage striker Patrick Bamford.
The 18-year-old has made just two substitute appearances during his Forest career, but is wanted by Premier League giants Chelsea.
He has also attracted interest from other clubs and Cotterill is to discuss the matter with the club's board as he does not expect Bamford to sign a new deal at the City Ground
"There has been a bid for him from Chelsea, it is for 1.5m," said Cotterill in the Nottingham Evening Post. "The problem we have is that Patrick has been offered a couple of contracts now.
"And I am not sure Patrick will sign a new contract at Nottingham Forest.
"We are going to have a meeting to decide where that goes. What materialises, we will find out shortly."
Ahead of Tuesday's transfer deadline, Cotterill is also hoping to bring in a new defender following the departure of Wes Morgan to rivals Leicester City.
He added: "Signings do not always drop in the order that you would like them to.
"Ideally, as Wes leaves, you would like a central defender to fall in to place. That has been very difficult, to get another central defender in or even another defender of any type.
"There is a shortage of them, at this moment in time. Or at least a shortage of players who are available.
"Trying to get away with the defenders that we have had has been nonsensical. We can't get away with that. We have to try very hard to get somebody, before the window closes."

Carroll: Yet to justify big price tag

    GIVE CARROLL TIME - McCARTHY

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy believes Liverpool striker Andy Carroll may have found his 35million price tag a "burden" as he celebrates 12 months at Anfield ahead of tonight's clash at Molineux.
McCarthy is an admirer of Carroll and it is well documented he tried to sign him without success from Newcastle following a loan spell with Preston.
He still believes Carroll will be a success at Liverpool but feels he has not been helped by the size of the fee in adjusting to life with one of the Barclays Premier League's leading clubs.
McCarthy said: "Andy is still a threat but price tags have made life hard for a lot of people.
"We should know from a player who left Wolves a long time ago (to join Manchester City) and was supposedly the top player, in Steve Daley.
"It makes life hard. If it just doesn't happen immediately, then it ends being a bit of a burden.
"He (Carroll) can't help the transfer fee. Straight away, and even more so now, you go to every ground and you're not flying then it's 'what a waste of money.'
"You're getting highlighted and spotlighted. It doesn't make playing any easier that's for sure.
"Maybe Liverpool play a slightly different way to what Newcastle did as well. But give him time. There's no doubt he's a good player."
McCarthy is an admirer of the way Kenny Dalglish has revived the Reds' fortunes during his year at the helm.
He said: "Kenny is Kenny. He's loved by everybody there. It's a great starting point when you go in and you have that wonderful feeling towards you.
"But he's backed it up by getting them into the League Cup final - and they're progressing."
McCarthy insists Wolves have done all they can to bring in new players in January but only on-loan Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong and Iceland international Eggert Jonsson have signed.
He said: "We've tried but we've had no joy with it other than taking a terrific player in Manny (Frimpong) on loan and Eggert who looks like he will be a good player for us.
"We've done everything we possibly can."
Wolves will be aiming to end a run of 10 games without a win and McCarthy laughed off rumours he had left the club after the home defeat by Aston Villa 10 days ago.
He said: "Yes, I left - and went back to my house as I do every game. It's not based in Molineux.
"There were wild rumours going around that I'd lost my job. Hey-ho, what can I do about that?"

Mancini and Tevez in happier times

    MANCINI BEMUSED BY TEVEZ CLAIMS

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has no idea why the blame for all Carlos Tevez's problems has been laid at his door.
With Tevez likely to remain at City beyond Tuesday night's transfer deadline, a repair job could be required to patch up the South American's differences with Mancini.
Yet, until Friday, when Tevez's long-time advisor Kia Joorabchian outlined the fact his client had always felt uneasy about Mancini, the City boss did not think there were any problems beyond their obvious fall-out in Munich last September.
"I don't know why they are suggesting this," said Mancini, of the image that is being portrayed about his relationship with Tevez.
"I have always had a good relationship with him.
"After Munich, I called him to my house and told him if he apologised he could come back. For me, it is no problem.
"I had always good behaviour from him. I don't know what the problem is. He has always said that he wants to leave Manchester, that he wants to be close to his family. I have helped him with this, last year and this year.
    "It is very strange."
The fact Joorabchian did make his comments means that it is fairly easy to come up with a name to fill the criticisms of some agents that Mancini, without naming anyone, outlined ahead of the Blues' Premier League encounter with Everton.
"Sometimes it is difficult to understand why some players have certain agents," said Mancini.
"If I was a player I would never take an agent like some who work here.
"First the agent should find the player work, after that they should help players in difficult situations; help them, not put them against the club or the manager or the other players.
"Agents are important for doing this, not only for earning lots of money."
With Mario Balotelli serving the second match of a four-game ban and both Yaya and Kolo Toure on Africa Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast, who take on co-hosts Equatorial Guinea in the quarter-finals next Saturday, Tuesday night's trip to Goodison Park could turn into a testing encounter.
City have triumphed on just one of their last 13 visits and Mancini has previously noted how David Moyes tends to get a bit more out of his Toffeemen when his side are the opposition.
However, Mancini finds it hard to believe the 22million departure of Joleon Lescott in 2009 is the cause.
"Manchester City paid a lot of money for Lescott," he said.
"We didn't take him for free. I don't think this would be a reason."

Re: Latest Transfer Update at 31-01-2012

    Joe Jordan: 'Nothing imminent'

GAME WON'T STOP LATE DEALS - JORDAN

Tottenham will not be stopped from completing any 11th-hour deals tonight despite their game against Wigan ending just before the transfer window shuts, according to first-team coach Joe Jordan.
Spurs have been linked with a host of players, most notably Blackburn pair Christopher Samba and Junior Hoilett, during this month's transfer window, but their only capture so far has been the permanent signing of Juventus loanee Yago Falque.
The Barclays Premier League title chasers have become infamous for their last-minute purchases on deadline day, although Harry Redknapp's ongoing trial may mean they are less likely to conclude any transfers.
Spurs' game against Wigan is due to end just 90 minutes before the window shuts, making the chances of any dealings even more remote, but Jordan claims that the match against the Latics does not mean a last-gasp venture into the market can be ruled out.
"I don't think the game will affect things, really," he said.
"There are people within the club that know what the thoughts of the manager are and they get on and do it.
"You concentrate on what job you are supposed to do so that's got nothing to do with it.
"Nothing is imminent as far as I am aware, but in the past Tottenham have come in with a late purchase and there's always a possibility in football."
Whether Spurs sign anyone before tonight's deadline could depend on the movement of players out of White Hart Lane.
The likes of Giovani Dos Santos, Heurelho Gomes, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka head a list of up to eight players who are either unsettled or want to leave the club after becoming frustrated at a lack of first-team football.
Sebastien Bassong has also been strongly linked with a move away from the club, although his departure will only come if Spurs snap up Samba as a replacement as they are already suffering from injuries at the back.
Jordan, meanwhile, gave some encouraging news about the return from injury of Sandro and Tom Huddlestone.
Sandro has not played since January 3 after tearing a calf muscle and Huddlestone has been absent all season due to a long-term ankle injury.
"Sandro has trained with us but he has been out for a month now," Jordan said.
"We are not rushing him. He is back, his injury is clear and we have to make sure he is OK by not rushing him.
"Tom Huddlestone is doing OK. Tom has been excellent in his recovery because he is that type of player that wants to go and get back as quickly as possible, but he realises that there is a need to be cautious."

David Pizarro: Manchester City transfer target

    ROMA CONFIRM DAVID PIZARRO TALKS

Roma have confirmed they are in talks with Manchester City over a loan deal for David Pizarro.
The midfielder has been linked with a number of rival Italian clubs, as well as Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg, but he now looks set for a loan move to City.
Roma general director Franco Baldini confirmed: "For our transfer market, I would say that there will be no surprises, we're just trying to close with City for (David) Pizarro.
"We are looking at a loan, we hope to reach an agreement by tonight."

Bobby Zamora: Could leave Fulham for QPR

    QPR HOLD BOBBY ZAMORA TALKS

QPR are in talks to sign Fulham striker Bobby Zamora, Press Association Sport understands.
The England international has been regularly linked with a January move away from the Cottagers and could now be set for a deadline-day move to Loftus Road.
It is understood former Fulham manager Mark Hughes has made an approach to sign Zamora, although personal terms could prove a stumbling block.
There has been much speculation in recent months of a rift between Zamora and Cottagers boss Martin Jol.
Although the pair have both played down such talk, speculation has been rife that the striker could move to pastures new.
QPR have often been mooted as a potential destination, with speculation heightened by the arrival of Hughes at Loftus Road.
Zamora played under the Welshman last season, scoring seven goals in 16 games in all competitions.
The 31-year-old penned a new four-year deal at Craven Cottage during Hughes' reign, tying him to the west Londoners until 2014.
However, Hughes is hoping he can persuade the striker to move away once he has pushed through a deal for Lazio's Djibril Cisse.
The France international looks set to join for a fee understood to be five million euros (4.18million) and QPR hope the deal can be completed in time for him to be registered to feature at Aston Villa tomorrow.
Nancy's Samba Diakite yesterday became Hughes' third signing since taking over from Neil Warnock following the arrival of AC Milan left-back Taye Taiwo and Manchester City's Nedum Onuoha.
Manchester United striker Federico Macheda arrived on loan earlier this month during Warnock's reign.
Meanwhile, QPR defender Matthew Connolly has joined npower Championship outfit Reading on loan until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old moved to Loftus Road from Arsenal in January 2008 and has made 125 appearances for the club.
