SUPERIOR, Wis. -- No. 10 Wisconsin-Superior overcame a quick start from No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus to earn a 5-1 upset victory on Tuesday night. The Gusties had plenty of scoring opportunities during their power play 4:51 into the game. Four shots on goal were produced during that power play, but Shanley Peters came up big stopping all of those shots for the Yellowjackets.
A few key blocked shots and big defensive plays by Wisconsin-Superior gave it some life in the latter part of the first period. The Yellowjackets started to show a little bit of rhythm, but it wouldnít phase Gustavus as Jess Harren squirted the puck past Peters to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets took that as motivation when they capitalized just 2:29 later. Kerry Mayhew took the pass from Teal Crosson down low and skated up the middle and fired a wrist shot that was saved by the Gustiesí Marah Sobczak. Sobczak lost the puck after she saved it and Mayhew found it between her legs and tapped it in the net to tie the game at one goal apiece. Gustavus Adolphus outshot the Yellowjackets 9-4 in the first period.
Wisconsin-Superior carried the momentum into the second period and didnít look back. A hooking penalty on the Gustiesí gave the Yellowjackets more fuel than they needed when Kelsey Firkus took a shot from the far left side that hit Gustie goaltender Sobczak in the left pad. The rebound came directly back toward Firkus where she took a shot that snuck past the left side of Sobczak to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. The power play goal came at 3:43 of the second period.
The Yellowjackets went on to produce two more solid scoring opportunities when Haley Olmstead and Mayhew both had breakaways that were shut down by Sobczak. UW-Superior continued to fight until the final period buzzer sounded. Mayhew skated up the side of the left circle and took a shot that caught Sobczak off guard, beating her on the stick side to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead. The second period was all Yellowjackets as they outshot the Gusties 10-5.
Wisconsin-Superior continued to show that the slow start to the game was nothing but a distant memory. They didnít waste time proving that on the power-play when Chelsey Wierschem dished a pass up top to Kaiti Graham where she let a slap shot go in traffic. Firkus was in the right place at the right time down low where she tipped Grahamís shot past Sobczak to put the Yellowjackets up 4-1 on the power-play.
The Gusties began to have a few legitimate scoring opportunities in the third period as they produced four consecutive shots at one point, but it was Peters who stepped up for the Yellowjackets when most needed. The Yellowjackets were not quite through with the Gusties as Dani Schultz put the exclamation point on the game with her team-leading 16th goal on the season at 14:44 of the third period. Gustavus came up on top in the shot category 10-8.
Peters finished the contest with 23 saves for the Yellowjackets while Sobczak had 17 saves for the Gusties.
