Following the successful roll out of an iPad app to view its premium content, Time Warner Cable as turned its attention to the humble PC.
In launching the beta version of TWC TV, the cable MSO is making available its content to Time Warner Cable subscribers on any computer, allowing them not only to stream live TV right to their desktop computer, but also to manage their DVR and tune their set-top box (STB).
Ever since launching the TWC TV app for the iPad, TWC has been keen to expand the platform portfolio for its customers I order that they, in TWC’s words, “get value from their video subscription”. Indeed in the face of the over-the-top (OTT) onslaught from the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, customer retention is priority number one for MSOs such as TWC and second- and even third-screen capability is regarded as a key tactic in achieving this objective.
With the PC app, TWC users can scroll a virtual channel browser to see a list of available programmes with listings displaying network logo, show name, and episode name using a programme guide giving up to seven days’ worth of listings data. Set-top box tuning features include a “Watch on TV” button within the programme description to tune an MDN/ODN set-top box directly to the channel. Users can schedule one-time and series recordings on MDN/ODN DVRs directly from the Guide’s show pages.
The service works for both PC and Mac over browsers including Internet Explorer 7.0 and above; Firefox 4 and up for Mac and Windows; Safari 5 and up for Mac and Windows; Chrome version 17. Users may also need to download or upgrade Silverlight to version 4.
