Showing relegation form, pay-TV channel Canal+ has been played off the pitch once more by Al-Jazeera who has won the full TV rights to UEFA Europa League football in France.
In addition to Al-Jaz getting a result, M6 will also gain FTA rights, including semi-final and final, for 2012 to 2015. Affiliate DTT channel W9 will broadcast the best match of the round. All matches will be produced in HD.
According to sport daily L’Equipe, UEFA has succeeded in doubling its revenues from this competition as both groups will pour €16 million each year into their offerings, double the current amount.
For Canal+, the news is another sickener. The pay-TV channel used to retransmit more than 90 Europa League matches each season. The encrypted channel has already lost part of the rights to French League 1 football and all Champions League matches.
