News Corp. is considering launching its own national sports network in the U.S., challenging the dominance of ESPN in the domestic market.
The Wall Street Journal reports that FOX is looking to roll out a national channel devoted to sports. FOX is not without a significant presence in the sports programming game, with networks that include the FOX Soccer Channel, FOX College Sports and 20 regional sports channels within the FOX Sports Network that already cover 75% of American homes.
The new channel, however, would be targeted at mainstream viewers, covering less niche and local content. David Hill, existing chairmen of FOX Sports, will be in charge of the development of the new entrant, and, according to Bloomberg, will look to expand internationally if a domestic launch goes well.
