A Kuwaiti court has fined a television station 500,000 dinars (US$1.8 million) for broadcasting a show deemed offensive to the Gulf state's ruling family.

Scope TV director and former parliamentarian Talal al-Saeed aired a programme in October 2010 in which it was claimed that 50 years ago ancestors of the Al Malek branch of the Al Sabah ruling family tried to overthrow the government.

The verdict comes three months after a three month suspended jail sentence was handed down to three members of the ruling family for ransacking the TV station involved.
