IPTV to pass half billion subs by 2017

Increasing convergence of telecoms, broadcasting and Internet network services will drive the IPTV market to 557.57 million subscribers by 2017 according to research by Global Industry Analysts (GIA).
This growth, the analyst argues, will be further boosted by a growing demand for digital media entertainment; the introduction of what the analyst describes as ‘innovative’ IPTV applications; attractive pricing models and service packages; the introduction of new IPTV operators; growing penetration of connected TV sets; the widespread proliferation of smart devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs; and increasing bandwidth speeds of broadband networks.
Despite, what GIA calls its relative immaturity when compared with cable and satellite, the analyst in its report regards IPTV as now havening evolved into one of the fastest growing television broadcast mediums, boasting double-digit growth despite the recession that has ravaged major economies since 2007. In fact GIA believes that the subsequent demand for cheaper entertainment options has helped IPTV’s development.
