Switzerland's cable operators have recorded strong growth for their digital services in Q1 2012. The highest increase was for digital television, cable association Swisscable announced in Bern.
Digital cable TV grew by 298,400 customers - an increase by 35% compared with Q1 2011 to a total of 1.14 million households. The share of digital TV households among cable customers stood at 41% on 31 March 2012 while it was 30% one year ago.
The growth was spurred mainly through the increasing number of HDTV channels. A large number of new HD channels will join the cable networks in May and June 2012, for example 10 new HD services from German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, Swiss commercial channel 3+ HD and pay-TV services such as Glitz HD and 13th Street Universal HD.
The cable operators also acquired 75,100 new customers (+9.3%) for internet access and 61,300 new customers (+14%) for telephony. A total of 879,800 Swiss households now surf the net through a cable subscription while 501,200 have signed up for cable telephony.
Swisscom, the cable operators' main competitor for digital TV customers, also posted growth figures. IPTV platform Swisscom TV had 655,000 customers on 31 March 2012 - almost 40% more than one year ago (469,000). In Q1 2012 alone, 47,000 new customers were added.
