German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland has won one of Germany's most popular TV show hosts for an exclusive late night show.

Harald Schmidt will present his well-known "Harald Schmidt Show" each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night at 22.15 CET on Sky Atlantic HD, Sky Hits and Sky Hits HD from autumn 2012.

With the strategic move, Sky will strengthen its entertainment line-up in an aim to attract new subscribers not mainly interested in Hollywood movies and its extensive sports coverage.

In the show, Schmidt will comment the day's events in a stand-up comedy segment and talk with celebrity guests in the studio. The producer will be Kogel & Schmidt GmbH which has also been producing Schmidt's late night show on commercial free-to-air channel Sat.1 which will be closed down on 3 May 2012 due to low viewer numbers.

Sky subscribers will also be able to watch the "Harald Schmidt Show" on mobile devices and on-demand through the Sky Go and Sky Anytime services, for example on the iPhone, iPad, Internet and Xbox 360.

"My talks with Sky and our common vision for programme quality have led to a timely result", producer Fred Kogel said in Munich. "With this, we can start our new show right after the planned summer break at the opening of the new Bundesliga season. As desired by the fans, we will air the original broadcast one hour earlier."

Schmidt said: "Late Night with Sky - is like heaven on earth for me."

The move underlines Sky's ambition to provide more than feature films and live sports. The broadcaster is currently also in talks with German production companies such as UFA regarding exclusive fictional series following the example of US pay-TV network HBO.
By making its programme offering attractive to a wider audience, Sky hops to grow its subscriber numbers and revenues per subscriber in order to realise its goal of reaching a positive EBITDA in 2013
