US video software company SeaChange International has licensed the APRICO content recommendation source code and other intellectual property rights from Royal Philips Electronics.
The agreement allows SeaChange to integrate personalised, content-aware and collaborative recommendation functionality into its Adrenalin multiscreen video back office platform. With recommendation functionality built-in, Adrenalin will enable video service providers to improve their buy rates and hence increase revenue per user, according to the company.
"Viewers today are confronted with hundreds of channels, thousands of on-demand movies and countless videos available through their TVs, PCs and mobile devices. Finding interesting content has become a real issue with digital TV subscribers often spending at least 25% of their viewing time browsing content catalogs or hopping channels," said SeaChange Software President Erwin van Dommelen. "For service providers, helping subscribers find content they will enjoy is key to retaining viewers and maximising revenues."
APRICO is a video content recommendation and targeting technology that helps viewers in finding content of interest. It identifies, recommends and delivers personalised content to viewers via TV, PC or mobile devices based on their profile, viewing behavior and/or explicit inputs.
The system which automatically learns preferences covers the full range of content available from linear broadcast material to video-on-demand (VOD), web video, home network content and user-targeted advertising. APRICO is fuelled by a database of EPG and Internet metadata owned by its strategic alliance partner Axel Springer, Germany's largest publishing house.
APRICO technology for both linear and on-demand services and recommendation models will be released with the Adrenalin multi-screen back office platform during the course of 2012.
