Marvel’s The Avengers has opened in 39 territories, bringing in a collective $185.1 million. The comic book blockbuster performed particularly well in Latin America, setting opening records in Mexico ($16.9 million), Brazil ($11.3 million), Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Central American and Bolivia.
Good box-office results usually translate into lucrative VOD revenue for major studios, streaming providers and pay-TV operators-- a particular boon in Latin America, where the VOD market is just starting to ramp up with subscribers.
The film opened early on the international stage (the U.S. release date is this weekend) to take advantage of the May Day holidays enjoyed throughout Europe.
Coming in at a comparatively limping No. 2 was Universal’s Battleship, which grossed $23.5 million grossed in its third weekend for a total of $170.9 million global revenue.
