German TV group ProSiebenSat.1 is to turn Austrian commercial broadcaster Austria 9 into a women's channel.

The channel, which the company took over in March 2012, will become a version of its German women's channel tailor-made for viewers in neighbouring Austria in July 2012.

sixx Austria will be distributed via cable, satellite and IPTV on the frequencies currently occupied by Austria 9, according to ProSiebenSat.1. Through this move, the advertising-financed free-to-air channel will reach around 80% of Austrian TV households from day one.

"Through the purchase of Austria 9, we will considerably benefit from the advantages of an existing and already active channel," Markus Breitenecker, managing director of ProSiebenSat.1 Austria, said in Vienna. "The target is to position sixx Austria right after our other four Austrian commercial channels Puls 4, ProSieben Austria, Sat.1 Österreich and kabel eins austria among the top 10 of Austrian broadcasters."

Like sixx in Germany, the Austrian version will mainly screen movies, series, telenovelas, reality shows, lifestyle and cookery shows. The line-up will include repeats of Puls 4 productions created for the Austrian audience such as "Austria's next Topmodel" and "Koch mit! Oliver".

The first original productions for sixx Austria are planned for 2013.
