EBITDA of 31%, up 5% year on year, from its broadcast division have given a rosy glow to the first quarter results from Telenor.

In addition for the first three months of 2012, the Norwegian telco was assisted by higher ARPU and effective cost-control measures at the Canal Digital business, who itself grew EBITDA by 39%, and a record high EBITDA margin from the Conax content protection subsidiary.

Canal Digital DTH revenues includes takings from its Nordic DTH subscribers, households in SMATV networks in Sweden, Denmark and Finland and DTT subscribers in Finland and were on level with Q1 2011. The company attributed this to the effect of price increases and increased sale of hardware and services which was offset by effects of reduced subscriber base, lower revenues from SMATV in Denmark and negative currency effects.

Overall Canal Digital EBITDA margin increased by 4 points compared with Q1 11 due to reduced content and operating costs. Even though there was an 11,000 dip in DTH satellite subs, Canal Digital boasted 954,000 subs and ARPU was up 4% to NOK 345 million.

For its part, Conax showed 9 % revenue growth driven by card sales in Asia and America and continued international growth with major growth of new in customers in Russia, Switzerland, India, Japan and Haiti across cable, DTT and DTH platforms.
