Germany's second largest cable operator Unitymedia has completed the deployment of its video-on-demand portal (VOD).

All customers in the two federal states served by the Liberty Global subsidiary, North-Rhine Westphalia and Hessen, can now use the service which launched in the first cities on 15 March 2012.

According to the Cologne-based company, movies and TV content was accessed more than 100,000 times from Unitymedia's digital library in the first two months. The most popular title was Hollywood blockbuster "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

The line-up comprises more than 1,500 movies, series and documentaries which viewers can watch by pressing a button on the HD PVR's remote control. The box has to be connected to the internet for this purpose. Payment is made through the conventional Unitymedia cable bill.

The offering is complemented by TV content from broadcasters. The programmes are available in standard definition, high definition (HDTV) and selected content in 3D.
