Austria's largest cable operator UPC Austria has commenced offering its customers the possibility to receive digital television without a set-top-box. Access is through a common interface module (CI+) directly via the flat-screen TV set.
The precondition is a TV set authorised by UPC. Certifications have been granted, for example, to Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, LG, Loewe, Sharp and Bang & Olufsen with further manufacturers to follow. The current list of compatible TV sets is available on the internet at http://www.upc.at/tv/ci+.
UPC customers wanting to use the module instead of a receiver pay €3 rent per month for the device. Owners of a UPC MediaBox pay €5.90 per month to enable reception on secondary TV sets.
In comparison with the UPC MediaBox which gives access to the whole digital portfolio, the module can't receive the interactive services such as video-on-demand (VOD), EPG and PVR functions.
