The European Football championship which will kick off on 8 June 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine will provide an incentive for many households in Germany to buy a new TV set in order to be able to watch the games on a large screen in high-definition (HDTV).
German industry association gfu expects a total of more than 9.8 million TV sets to be sold in Germany in 2012, marking a new record sales figure. Large-screen sets with screen diagonals from 37 inches (94 cm) will resemble the largest part in turnover and around half of the number of TV sets sold.
Nearly 100% of the TV sets sold in 2012 will be HDTV-compliant. At the end of 2011, there were around 39 million HDTV TV sets in German households.
