Walt Disney Co.'s TV Everywhere app could launch as early as next week, with Comcast subscribers the first to be allowed to authenticate onto the app.
CEO Bob Iger told investors that the experience would be very similar to the company's WatchESPN service, which allows sports viewing via Web, smartphone and tablet. Time Warner Cable and Comcast subscribers are allowed to tap that app.
The ABC national network and the ABC Family cable net could be next to get the TV Everywhere treatment, Iger said, but there's no word on timing for that.
It's unclear what benefit TV Everywhere can bring to a basic cable channel like Disney, considering that pay-TV operators have their own TV Everywhere portals that offer that same content. HBO GO remains the posterchild for network-based TV Everywhere, because as a premium channel HBO has more leverage in terms of what is and is not available via the cable, satellite or IPTV operator's own app. WatchESPN meanwhile offers additional, specialised content that helps sweeten the pot for consumers.
