High-speed Internet access has developed into one of the main growth factors for the German cable industry, with two out of three new broadband Internet customers opting for cable Internet, according to German cable association ANGA.
In total, the German cable operators now have more than 3.6 million Internet customers, corresponding with a market share of 13%. ADSL providers continue to remain in the lead, but could face a declining market share both because of attractively priced cable offers and higher bandwidths.
By early 2013, the cable companies want to provide around 60% of German households with a data rate of 100 Mbps. More than half of cable internet customers sign up for more than 30 Mbps, according to ANGA, with 6.6% choosing 50 Mbps or more.
