Connected home technologies and solutions provider Netgem has announced a number of wins for its STB technology with Modern Times Group’s Nordic online pay-TV provider Viaplay and French overseas cable operator Zeop.
Viaplay claims to be the leading online pay-TV service in the Nordic region, and offers (OTT) delivery of premium TV, movies and sports content to anyone with a broadband connection on multiple devices. This now includes the Viaplay box which is a customised version of the Netgem Multifunction hybrid STB and it also uses Netgem’s middleware to provision the enhanced Viaplay service alongside linear channels. The STB offers Ethernet, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity to access and share multimedia content stored on the home network and also offers UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) for connection between the units in the house hold.
The deal represents the first time a pay-TV operator in the Nordics has combined adaptive bitrate streaming technology and free-to-air digital terrestrial TV (DTT) in a single channel list with seamless channel change.
Commented Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of Viaplay: “The launch of the Viaplay box in Sweden is the next step in our continuous evolution and development of our service. Our wide library of TV, movie and premium sports content is highly attractive to viewers, and we are focused on both improving the user experience and the quality of our streaming and make it as simple as possible for our subscribers to access the content. “
For its part, Zeop is partnering with Netgem to launch its next generation TV service based on Netgem’s N5200 STB and middleware. Netgem’s hybrid solution is designed to enables Zeop to extend its reach through its own cable network and through subsidiary Reunicable’s FTTH network. The new service offers new features such as VOD, catch-up TV and media centre functionality to subscribers.
