The executive vice president of Orbital Sciences Corporation, Mike Larkin, and Hispasat’s CEO, Carlos Espinós, have signed a contract in Santander for the construction of two new satellites.
The satellites, the Amazon 4A and 4B, will be located at the orbital position 61°W and will increase the presence of the company in the Americas, where Grupo Hispasat is a leader in the distribution of content in Spanish and Portuguese.
With these new satellites Grupo Hispasat will meet the growing demand for satellite capacity - mainly for satellite television platforms - present in Latin America. In 2011, 49.1% of total rental income of HISPASAT space capacity came from the Americas.
The Amazon 4A will be built on a platform GeoStar-2 and carry a payload of 24 Ku-band transponders with coverage for South America, from Venezuela and Colombia to southern Argentina and Chile, with a performance of 46 to 48.5 dBW throughout the mainland. The launch is scheduled for early 2014.
The Amazon 4B, which will be more powerful and the design of which will be determined later depending on market requirements, will be launched into orbit in 2015.
