Communications service provider Maxis has signed new strategic partnerships with 14 content providers, to deliver IPTV in Malaysia.

The content partnerships will enable Maxis to deliver on-demand movies and series, including high definition and 3D content as well as seven free-to-air channels. The partners include Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), Media Prima, Brilliant Pictures, Vision Plus Entertainment, Travel Channel International and All Asia Multimedia Networks.

Maxis chairman Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda said: “Today’s signing is a key milestone for Maxis, as it signifies the commitment to enrich the lives of our customers. We look forward to playing an active role in supporting the government’s initiative to advance the Malaysian creative content industry."

Government minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the partnership is a healthy development for the entertainment and media industry.

“The industry has developed to a strong position, where demand for local content is now bringing significant revenue to many local animation and film producers, with ‘exportable quality’ content worldwide.

“In Malaysia, the industry is estimated to be worth RM16 billion based on advertising, animation, digital content, television, games, music and video."

Last year, the sector generated RM9.4 billion in revenue with more than 45,000 creative industry professionals and contributed 1.27% to the gross domestic product.

The IPTV service will be available in July via Maxis Home Fibre Internet.
