Spain’s House of Representatives has appointed state attorney Leopoldo González-Echenique as the new president of RTVE.
His predecessor, Alberto Oliart, resigned in July 2011 after less than two years in office, citing personal reasons.
Echenique becomes the third president of the Corporación RTVE, which replaced the old Ente RTVE.
On January 1st, 2007, the Corporation Entity became a state corporation with special autonomy and independence of the Government.
González-Echenique takes over RTVE at a very complex time for public television, with its annual budget cut by 204 million euros.
The decline in the budget comes in a year that will face major events of public interest, such as the London Olympics, and the renewal or not of some sports rights.
One of the main challenges González-Echenique will face will be attempting to return RTVE to the top of the ratings, a place that was grabbed by Telecinco in March. After six months of continued leadership, TVE fell to second with a 12.8% average audience share, while Telecinco was in the lead with 13.9%.
