French TV regulator CSA has delivered the licences to the six new HD digital terrestrial channels due to launch in December to Chérie HD, L’Equipe HD, HD 1, RMC Découverte, Tvous La Télédiversité and 6ter.
The new channels are intended to enrich the current offer comprised by the 19 national free DTT channels. According to the regulator, five of them, sport channel L’Equipe HD excepted, will contribute to financing French production and creation sectors as of 2013, even though they will not cover the whole French territory yet.
Among those five, four—RMC Découverte (doc/NextRadioTV), Chérie HD (women/NRJ), HD1 (fiction/TF1) and 6terfamily/M6) —have committed to pour more than €40 million into production over the 2013-2015 period. A specific effort will be made to produce HD native and original programming.
The channels will be carried on the R7 and R8 multiplexes, and will initially reach a quarter of the French population, gradually increasing to 97% by autumn 2014.
