Reaching out to audiences local and among the nation’s global diaspora, leading Turkish pay-TV provider D-Smart has launched a new over-the-top (OTT) multiscreen service.
D-Smart is Turkey's 2nd largest DTH platform claiming a 37.57% market share, and provides 1.8 million users with 29 HDTV channels and thematic networks, as well as Turkey's public channels and other local and international satellite channels. Running across multiple connected devices, including PC/Mac, tablets and smartphones, the new OTT service will support the delivery of live and on-demand programmes to audiences in Turkey and around the world.
Even though the move essentially mirrors that of a number of global pay-TV providers around the world to consumer demand for IP-delivered video solutions, the Turkish market is said to be able to offer a particularly compelling opportunity given that, according to data by Screen Digest, multiscreen viewing in Turkey is expected to grow five times as quickly as traditional digital TV by 2016 which itself is likely to double in the same period.
Enabling the deployment is a partnership with video management software and services company KIT digital who designed and configured the software solution at the heart of the OTT service based on its Cosmos video platform. Cosmos will provide the software backbone of D-Smart's new service, enabling premium content delivery to multiple devices via a consistent user interface and supporting new platforms and devices in the future. The entire solution can be scaled to meet the viewership demands of audiences in and outside of Turkey, enabling support for multi-lingual, multi-currency and multi-territory geo-blocking. KIT digital and will partner with a local systems integrator to complete the implementation.
"D-Smart is in the business of delivering superior content to our customers here in Turkey…we will now be able to deliver this content to a global audience the way they want to view it -- anytime, anywhere, on any device," explained Erdogan Simsek, VP of Technology at D-Smart. "KIT digital's superior software and deep experience made them the obvious choice for this project, and we hope to tap them in the future as we expand this service to new platforms and audiences."
