    Casillas trusts Real over Modric

Captain targeting Champions League final spot this season
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 8:50am

Iker Casillas: Real Madrid captain has backed the club to make the best decision over Luka Modric

Iker Casillas believes Luka Modric will be good enough to play for Real Madrid if Jose Mourinho decides to sign the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
Modric is reportedly keen to join the Spanish champions, but Tottenham will not let the Croatia international leave until their valuation is met.
Real captain Casillas did not want to be drawn too much into the club's bid to sign Modric, but has backed Mourinho's judgement when it comes to improving the squad.

"I know him," the Spain goalkeeper told AS. "He has been a great player ever since he signed for Tottenham. I faced him in the Euros and he had a very good season.
"If the manager thinks he ought to be then I am sure he will be at the level of this squad. It is not our responsibility to say anything more.
"The club and the manager are those that decide what is best for the team to move a step forward."
    Experience

Meanwhile, Casillas is hoping that Real can reach the UEFA Champions League final this season after falling at the semi-final stage in the last two years.
He added: "Our goals are similar to those last year. We are hoping to move a step forward like we have in the other seasons since Mourinho has been with us.
"We want to win the league again, the Super Cup and then after two years of arriving at the doors of the Champions League final, we want to reach the final of Europe's main competition.

"I think we have extraordinary fans, a magnificent stadium and an incredible squad. With all of this it is clear that this team deserves a European Cup, but there are many teams fighting for this title.
"There are steps we have taken. For example, two years ago players like (Mesut) Ozil or (Sami) Khedira didn't have the experience they have now. The same applies with Karim (Benzema). But thinking about the 10th European Cup is not an obsession because we face the start of the league and the Super Cup first."

Bruce happy with deal for son

Hull City manager feels defender is a good free transfer
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 8:59am

Alex Bruce: Former Leeds defender has agreed a reported two-year contract to join Hull City

Steve Bruce is confident his son Alex will be a 'very good free transfer' for Hull City and expects the defender to handle the pressure of playing for him.
Former Leeds United stopper Bruce has been training with the Tigers for the past three weeks and was also a target for several other clubs.
The 27-year-old previously worked with his dad at Birmingham City and is reported to have agreed a two-year contract at the KC Stadium.

Tigers boss Bruce is aware the signing could attract some negative headlines, but he believes the deal makes sense for all concerned.
"Nepotism is the word that will always crop up, and you have to think about that, but he's at an age where he can handle it. I'm sure it won't be a problem."
Steve Bruce Quotes of the week
    Nepotism

"Of course it puts a bit of pressure on him being the manager's son, but he's played in the Championship for a long time and enjoyed a good career at this level," Bruce told the Hull Daily Mail.
"Nepotism is the word that will always crop up, and you have to think about that, but he's at an age where he can handle it. I'm sure it won't be a problem.

"When you look at what's going around on the Bosman market, he makes a very good free transfer.
"Defensively, in terms of numbers, we're a bit thin with the injury to Liam Rosenior and Jack Hobbs out until Christmas.
"It's imperative that you have cover in the right areas and Alex can fill in anywhere along the back line.
"He's 27 and he'll handle this division. He's at the peak of his career and looks in good shape. I'm sure he'll be a decent acquisition."

    Boro close on Carayol

    Winger set to leave
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 8:59am

Mustapha Carayol: Set to leave Bristol Rovers for Middlesbrough

Bristol Rovers have confirmed that they are close to agreeing a deal with Middlesbrough for Mustapha Carayol.
Boro have been on the trail of the 23-year-old Gambian-born winger for much of the summer.
Derby County, Barnsley and Leicester City have also been keen but Boro look to be firmly in pole position to seal his signature.

"We think we're very close to a deal with Middlesbrough, but it's not quite done yet," said Rovers chief Mark McGhee.
McGhee has been running the rule over German trialist Fabian Broghammer, who is seen is a likely replacement for Carayol.
Boro are hoping that they can confirm the signings of both Carayol and Doncaster's George Friend early this week.

    Chelsea looking for more

Gourlay admits there are still areas of the squad to strengthen
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 8:35am

Ron Gourlay: Chelsea chief executive confirmed the club are still trying to sign more players

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay says the club are still in the market for more new signings before the close of the transfer window.
The European champions have been active in the market already this summer and have added to their first-team ranks with the signings of Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Oscar.

However, there are still positions that manager Roberto Di Matteo is looking to strengthen, with right-back and up front the areas reported to be in need of improvement.
Didier Drogba's departure at the end of last season has left Chelsea short of experienced striking options, while Jose Bosingwa's exit means there is a gap to fill at the back.
Gourlay confirmed the Blues are exploring their options as the club aim to bring in more fresh faces before the start of the new Premier League season in mid-August.

"While we ended with a very strong season, it was clear that there were some areas where we did have to strengthen, so we knew we were always going to have to do that," said Gourlay.
"If the right players become available at the right time we will sign them.
"We've done that and we are still continuing to look at one or two positions and we will see how that develops over the next couple of weeks."

    Rodgers to decide on Aquilani

MIdfielder's agent says there has been no bid from Fiorentina
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 7:51am

Alberto Aquilani: Liverpool midfielder has been linked with Fiorentina as Brendan Rodgers assesses the midfielder

Brendan Rodgers says he will make a decision on Alberto Aquilani's future this week after the Liverpool midfielder's agent denied reports that Fiorentina had made a bid.
Aquilani is determined to prove his worth to Rodgers during pre-season after spending the last two years on loan back in Italy at Juventus and AC Milan respectively.

The 28-year-old has made just 18 Premier League appearances since joining the Reds in 2009, but speculation continues to link Aquilani with a return to Serie A.
His omission from Liverpool's friendly against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday only served to fuel rumours regarding his future and Rodgers is still to decide whether Aquilani will be part of his long-term plans.
    Simple

"The situation with Alberto is simple," said Rodgers in the Daily Mirror. "I have wanted to assess him over the first few weeks of training.
"Over the course of the next week, I will make a decision on what's going to be best for us, whether he will be useful for the group or whether it's best for him to move on."
Reports have claimed a deal in the region of 7million is close to being agreed with Fiorentina, but Aquilani's representative Franco Zavaglia says there has been no contact with the Viola.

"Let us not open up a soap opera, please," agent Franco Zavaglia told Radio Sportiva.
"Aquilani is a Liverpool player and he is happy where he is now. We have not received any requests from Daniele Prade, but that was only to be expected, seeing as Aquilani will only leave on a permanent move and at figures Fiorentina cannot afford.
"I would rule out a current return to Italy."

    Mancini waits on RVP

City boss admits striker has tough decision to make
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 7:43am

Robin van Persie: Wanted in Manchester

Roberto Mancini admits Robin van Persie has a difficult decision to make about his future with Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus all battling for his coveted signature.
The Dutchman has made it clear he will not sign a new contract at the Emirates, but Arsenal have so far not agreed a deal with any of the three clubs to make a bid for his services.

Van Persie too has yet to outline his preferred destination and Mancini understands that it is not an easy decision for the striker, should he be given a straight choice between the three.
"When you talk about Manchester City, Manchester United and Juve, it is difficult for a player to choose between those three clubs," said Mancini from City's pre-season tour in the Far East.

"They are all top teams and I've no idea what will happen with him. If we have a chance to take him, we will try because we think he is a top striker.
"For now he is an Arsenal player and I think Arsenal are a top team. It is not easy for Van Persie and other players to leave them."
    Tough

Mancini insists City find it tougher to sign players than most clubs because of their wealthy owner Sheikh Mansour.
"It's not easy when City try to buy a player," he said.
"The club we are buying from asks for 30 or 40 per cent more. For this reason it is sometimes difficult to do business. But I think also we need to work better."

    McCulloch urges players to stay
    Last Updated: July 30 2012, 7:06 BST

Lee McCulloch has urged Rangers players who have remained at the club so far not to head for the exit door.

McCulloch: Scored the winner on Sunday at Brechin
The versatile utility man - who grabbed the winner in Sunday's 2-1 Ramsdens Cup win over Brechin - was one of the first to state his desire to stay at Ibrox despite playing in the Irn-Bru Third Division this season.
However, a question mark remains over the futures of others - such as Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and Dorin Goian - with a number of first-team regulars having already sealed moves elsewhere.

McCulloch said: "We need to try to keep everybody that's in the dressing room and hopefully the manager is allowed to bring in two or three more to help everybody.
"We couldn't even fill the bench today. I definitely think we need bodies in - but hopefully everybody will stay as well."
Several high-profile first-team regulars refused to transfer their contracts to Charles Green's newco after the club was consigned to liquidation this summer.

But, despite failing to secure entry to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and being forced down the divisions, Rangers still look set to attract a decent standard of player.
Former Hearts midfielder Ian Black has already signed, while Craig Beattie has been training with the club and Ally McCoist is hopeful of completing the capture of Dean Shiels.
McCulloch said: "It's the size of the club. Not everybody gets the chance to play at as big a club as Rangers are.
"They have been kind enough to me over the years and I've had the success so that's why I chose to stay.
"The amount of people who have come out and said they want to come to Rangers in the Third Division just shows the size of the club and how well it's followed."

Andy Little - who re-signed for Rangers on Friday - opened the scoring after four minutes at Brechin but an equaliser from Andy Jackson forced the tie into extra-time, before McCulloch claimed the winner.
He said: "It was good to win the game. It was our first game and I thought we were maybe a yard off (pace) all over the pitch due to lack of games but it was good to start the season with a win.
"I don't think there will be a culture shock this season - we are quite a level-headed dressing room.
"We can't pick our opposition, we just have to go out and win games whoever it is. We just want to keep winning."

McCoist faces a race against time to assemble a squad before a 12-month transfer embargo comes into effect on September 1.
Chief executive Green said: "I don't know about individual names, because that's Alastair's decision, but I know he's speaking to two or three.
"I've been speaking to two or three agents on his behalf. We would expect there would be more signings over the next seven days."

Real asking too much for Joselu

Hoffenheim shocked by Spanish club's asking price
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 12:26pm

Joselu: The forward is under contract at Real Madrid until the summer of 2014

Hoffenheim are refusing to meet Real Madrid's 'inexplicable' 8-10million (6.2m-8.2m) asking price for forward Joselu.
The 22-year-old, who has played for Spain's Under 21s in the past, has been building a reputation playing for Real's B team in the domestic third division.

Joselu is under contract until June 2014, but he is attracting interest from Hoffenheim and the Bundesliga club could be prepared to offer him first-team football.
However, Hoffenheim manager Markus Babbel is less than impressed with Real's initial valuation of at least 8m and does not want to continue talks until the Spanish club reconsider.

Former Liverpool and Germany defender Babbel told Deutsche Presseagentur: "A transfer fee of 8-10m for a third-tier player is absolutely inexplicable. This is too much. The deal is off.
"We are still interested, of course. But we are initially bailing out of this. Should Real Madrid be happy with less than that (fee), they are welcome to give us a phone call."

    Jewell confirms Friend bid

Doncaster defender ready to finalise move to Middlesbrough
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 12:50pm

George Friend: Doncaster defender is joining Middlesbrough but was also wanted by Ipswich

Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed he made a bid for George Friend as the Doncaster Rovers defender prepares to finalise a move to Middlesbrough.
Doncaster accepted an offer from Boro for Friend earlier this month, but at the time Dean Saunders expected to receive further interest in the left-back.

Nottingham Forest and Ipswich were both linked with bids, and Jewell admitted it turned into a three-way fight for his signature.
"Dean Saunders rang me and said that Middlesbrough and Forest had made a bid for him," said Jewell in the East Anglian Daily Times.
"We did enquire after him, in fact we made a bid for him, but he's going to Middlesbrough."
Boro confirmed last Friday that Friend had agreed personal terms and undergone a medical, with the transfer expected to be finalised on Monday.

    Doumbia deal for Wolves

Midfielder arrives on loan with a view to a permanent deal
    Last Updated: July 30, 2012 12:57pm

Tongo Doumbia: The midfielder is a box-to-box player, according to Stale Solbakken

Wolverhampton Wanderers have beaten Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion to the signing of midfielder Tongo Doumbia on a season-long loan.
The Mali international has moved to Molineux from French club Rennes with a view to a permanent deal as Stale Solbakken makes his third senior signing of the summer.

Doumbia had also been linked with Premier League West Brom but he trained with Wolves, who were relegated last season, on Sunday and could now make his debut in Tuesday's friendly against Shrewsbury.
"I am delighted we have managed to sign Tongo who will bring some more quality to the squad," Solbakken told Wolves' official website.
"He also has good experience for a young player and made 26 appearances last season for a top-six club in France.

"He is a box-to-box player who can operate in that central role defensively and offensively and as well as being physically strong he is also good in possession.
"We'll have another look at him tomorrow but there is a chance he will be involved in the game against Shrewsbury."
