With over 150 000 illegal antenna in use, pay-TV piracy in Ecuador is causing losses in the region of $54 million to companies and $28 million to the state according to a report by the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SUPERTEL).

The report also suggests that 13% of the population currently receives a subscription TV service, while 20% receive the signal through illegal means.

Given this situation, Fabian Jaramillo, Superintendent of Telecommunications, said: "We will continue operations to confiscate the irregular devices that allow access to pay TV signal.”

The official stressed that the fight against this problem will focus on both those who already have such devices installed and those who are in the process of importing them.
