Brazilian state-owned telephone provider Telebras has signed an agreement with Spanish firm IslaLink to construct a submarine fibre optic cable linking Brazil and South America to Europe.

Caio Bonilha, Telebras’ president, said: "For Brazil, the construction of these networks of highly strategic submarine cables will impact positively on increased cultural and scientific exchange and trade between the five continents."

Additionally, the project will allow Brazil to lower the cost of achieving greater internet browsing speeds (both downstream and upstream), with direct connections to servers located in each of the continents.
