German broadcast group RTL has acquired an extensive rights package from Hollywood studio Sony Pictures.

The multi-year agreement covers the TV rights of all theatre movie releases from 2013, TV series from the US 2013/14 season and library titles, reports German business newspaper "Handelsblatt".

Financial details of the deal through which the Cologne-based TV group excels its competitor ProSiebenSat.1 are not known, but market experts expect it to amount to a three-digit million figure.

The package contains new cinema releases such as Roland Emmerich's "White House Down", children's movie "Die Schlümpfe 2" and older blockbusters like "Spiderman", "Men in Black" and "Da Vinci Code".
