The French subsidiary of production house Endemol has appealed against a recent ruling from a Paris Court that rejected its claims of unfair competition against the Banijay Group's ALJ Productions over TV format Dilemme.
"We are extremely surprised by this verdict,” an Endemol spokesperson said. “The Court of Appeal has taken the view that the core characteristics of this kind of reality TV program do not constitute a format that can be protected by law. This ruling is potentially dangerous for the production sector as a whole; one which may jeopardize creative initiatives whilst encouraging unfair behaviour and piracy.”
