    Barca plan new Messi deal

Catalan giants feel duty to secure Argentine's future
    Last Updated: September 20, 2012 4:09pm

Lionel Messi: In line to be rewarded with a new contract by Barcelona

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has revealed the club are preparing a new deal to keep Lionel Messi at Camp Nou.
Messi still has four years to run on his current deal, but Barca are ready to reward the Argentine ace with a new improved contract.
The 25-year-old has established himself as the best player in the world since coming through the Barca ranks and he underlined his importance to the club with two late goals to help them come from behind to beat Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Champions League.

Rosell feels the Catalan giants have a responsibility to look after Messi's interests, although he admits talks have yet to be scheduled
"It finishes in 2016, but it would be irresponsible to not improve his contract," Rosell told Catalunya Radio.
"You have to think about such things. Right now there is nothing scheduled, but this is a machine that is constantly in motion and things can change at any moment."

"It finishes in 2016, but it would be irresponsible to not improve his contract."
Sandro Rosell on Lionel Messi Quotes of the week
Rosell added: "The coaching staff think about next Sunday, we look further down the line and take the more distant future into consideration.
"Work has to start now on the contract that will take effect from 2016."

Rosell also refused to get involved in the debate surrounding Real Madrid's problems amid reports of dressing room unrest at the Bernabeu.
"The day you become preoccupied by other teams' matters is the day you start to lose," continued Rosell. "We need to remain a close group and work as such."

    Doyle pens new Blades contract
    Last Updated: September 20, 2012 5:00pm

    Doyle: Commits to Blades

Sheffield United skipper Michael Doyle has signed a new three-year contract at Bramall Lane.
The 31-year-old midfielder, who joined the club from Coventry in January 2011, played a key role for the Blades last season when they reached the League One play-off final.
"I had a great time last season, it was the most enjoyable in my career to date, it was unfortunate the way it ended, but I feel I can play my part in getting this club back into the Championship at the very least," the Irishman told the club's official website.

"I enjoy coming to work and working with my boss, the people throughout the club have made this feel like home and I was only too happy to extend my stay until 2015. Hopefully, if I'm fit and healthy, the club will still want me beyond this deal."

Manager Danny Wilson added: "This is a marker from the club that we want to look beyond the next six months or so, our long-term planning was to keep Michael tied down and this should send out great vibes."
Doyle, who started out at Celtic before spending eight years at Coventry and a year on loan at Leeds, has made a total of 76 appearances for the Blades.

    Pilgrims move for Jenkins

Fletcher keen on bring in Hornets midfielder
    Last Updated: September 20, 2012 4:36pm

Ross Jenkins: Set to join Plymouth on loan from Watford

Sky Sports understands Plymouth are poised to sign Watford midfielder Ross Jenkins on loan.
Watford boss Gianfranco Zola is willing to let Jenkins move out on loan as he has dropped down the pecking order at Vicarage Road.
Zola brought in a host of new faces during the summer transfer window and Jenkins' first-team opportunities are set to be limited.
The 21-year-old has only made one appearance this term in the Capital One Cup clash with Bradford and he is keen to head t out and get some regular action under his belt.
Plymouth boss Carl Fletcher is keen to bolster his squad and he has lined up a deal to bring Jenkins to Home Park on a temporary basis.

    Crewe consider Aneke extension
    Last Updated: September 20, 2012 7:58pm

    Aneke: On loan with Railwaymen

Crewe boss Steve Davis is pondering a possible loan extension for Arsenal youngster Chuks Aneke.
The 19-year-old's full Alex debut turned sour last weekend when he received a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Stevenage's Anthony Grant.

Aneke serves the second game of a three-match ban when the Railwaymen take on Leyton Orient this weekend, meaning he will only be available again for the final game of his stint at Gresty road against Oldham on October 2.
"We are now without Chuks for three games and it is disappointing because we are short of midfield players," Davis told Crewe's official website. "It is also disappointing for Chuks because he wanted to come here and show everyone the ability he has.

"He wants to play and we will discuss about extending his loan or not when the time comes. We haven't made a decision yet and I will contact (assistant manager) Steve Bould at Arsenal and discuss things. He would have seen the challenge and know that he isn't that sort of player.
"Chuks has ability and it is a shame that he hasn't been able to have the impact he would have wanted because of his three-match suspension."

    Vieira dismisses Dzeko rumours

    City chief rubbishes Juve link
    Last Updated: September 20, 2012 6:59pm

    Edin Dzeko: Staying with City

Manchester City's Patrick Vieira has rubbished suggestions that Edin Dzeko could be sold by the club any time soon.
The Bosnian was strongly linked with a move away from the club over the summer, and most recently Juventus were linked with a January move.
But Vieira, City's football development executive, has insisted that Juve would be wasting their time even showing an interest in Dzeko - who scored during City's midweek 3-2 Champions League loss to Real Madrid.

"Dzeko to Juve? For us he is a key player," he told Tuttojuve.com.
"Did you see that goal he scored against Real Madrid? I'm sorry for the Bianconeri fans, but the extraordinary strikers do not move from Manchester."
Dzeko joined City in January 2011 when they paid Wolfsburg 27million for his services.

Former England international Emile Heskey has joined Newcastle Jets
    Last Updated: September 20, 2012 10:09pm

Emile Heskey: Former Aston Villa striker has joined A-League side Newcastle Jets

Former England international striker Emile Heskey has ended his search for a new club by signing for Australian side Newcastle Jets.
Heskey was available on a free transfer after leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season and he had been linked with a move to Hull City among other clubs.

However, the 34-year-old has opted for a fresh challenge down under and he has become the Jets' marquee signing for the 2012/13 season.
"This is an exciting new period in my life and I am looking forward to making a special contribution to the A-League and most importantly, to the Jets," Heskey told his new club's official website.
"I hope I can help grow football at the grassroots level and also provide advice to young players at the Jets.

"The season isn't far away, so I will be in Newcastle soon, training with my new team-mates and be ready for kick off on October 7."
Heskey joins former Sunderland forward Michael Bridges at the Jets and coach Gary van Egmond is delighted with the capture.
"Emile is someone who has unbelievable experience, having played for England 62 times," van Egmond said.
"His effectiveness in being able to hold the ball up and invite other players to play off him is going to be a big benefit to us.
"He's someone who can really lead the line and is exactly what we've been missing."

    Ganso seals move

    Brazil international finalises deal
    Last Updated: September 21, 2012 7:25am

Ganso: On the move from Santos to Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo have confirmed the signing of Brazil international Ganso from rivals Santos.
Ganso has penned a five-year deal after Sao Paulo agreed a deal of around 7.5million.
In a typically complicated deal in South America, Sao Paulo will own 32% of his economic rights while investors will own the remaining 68%.
Santos will receive five per cent of any profit Sao Paulo make if Ganso is sold within the next two years.
    Wish

The 22-year-old, who is regarded as one of the top young players in Brazil, was delighted to finalise his move.
"I'm very happy, a fulfilled wish. Since Sao Paulo showed interest in
signing me, I wanted that the deal to happen quickly," he said.
"I thank the interest from other clubs, but Sao Paulo moved me. Now that everything worked out, I can't wait to give back on the pitch.
"Everything was done the correct way and I can say today that I'm very happy for joining Sao Paulo."

    O'Neill weighs up McFadden deal

Black Cats boss an admirer of former Everton man
    Last Updated: September 21, 2012 9:22am

Martin O'Neill: Sunderland boss a big admirer of James McFadden

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed James McFadden has linked up with the club on trial.
As revealed by skysports.com on Thursday, Sunderland are weighing up a move for free agent McFadden as they look at bolstering their squad.
O'Neill is an admirer of the former Everton man and admits he could win a deal at the Stadium of Light to add to his attacking options.
"He's been here for a few days, he has no club, he's out of contract and he's been training with Motherwell for some time to get fit," O'Neill told The Journal.

"We will see what happens, there have been no promises made on either side - after a day or two of working with me he may not fancy it here!
"He is a very decent footballer; he was allowed to leave Everton because they felt they had enough in those forward positions to think he wouldn't figure.
"We have a smaller squad, so he is definitely worth looking at."

Reading midfielder Jem Karacan has revealed his desire to play for a Turkish club in the future
    Last Updated: September 21, 2012 10:00am

Jem Karacan: Has revealed he wants to play for a Turkish club in the future

Reading midfielder Jem Karacan says he is happy after committing to the club but has revealed he wants to play for a Turkish side in the future.
The 23-year-old, who came through the academy at Reading and has already made 125 appearances, pledged his future to the Royals earlier this week when he signed a new three-year deal.
While delighted to extend his stay at the Madejski Stadium, Karacan says he would love to play in Turkey one day.

The young midfielder has a Turkish father and has already represented the country up to under-21 level.
He told the Daily Star: "I've been here for nine years and this club is close to my heart. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
But Karacan added: "A few years ago I was close to going to Besiktas.
"And I think my dad would have a go at me if I didn't play in Turkey one day.
"He wants me to play for Galatasaray. One day in the future, though."

    Sullivan funded Carroll deal

Hammers co-chairman reveals state of club's finances
    Last Updated: September 21, 2012 10:10am

David Sullivan: Has revealed he is helping to fund a deal for Andy Carroll as West Ham have no spare money for transfers

David Sullivan has revealed he and fellow West Ham co-chairman David Gold funded the summer signing of Andy Carroll out of their own pockets as the club continues to tackle significant debts.
The England striker completed a loan move to Upton Park from Liverpool towards the end of the summer transfer window with a view to a permanent deal next summer.
He made an instant impact on his debut against Fulham earlier this month, setting up two of West Ham's three goals before limping off with a hamstring injury in the second half.

It was a significant investment by the London club, who were playing Championship football last season and are still paying off debts accrued under their previous ownership.
Sullivan revealed that because of those debts he and Gold are funding the deal for the 23-year-old out of their own pockets.
He also admits that boss Sam Allardyce would have been unable to strengthen the squad at all this summer without their backing.
"I cannot give confidential details of contracts but for the period of time Andy will be with us it's as expensive a player as we have ever signed."

David Sullivan Quotes of the week

"We are financing everything out of our own money,' he told the Daily Mail.
"Had we not put money in this year we could not have bought a player. Because there is not sufficient money to pay the debt. I cannot give confidential details of contracts but for the period of time Andy will be with us it's as expensive a player as we have ever signed.
"But our manager thought he was the most important player we could sign this summer and that is why we pursued him. Unfortunately he got this hamstring injury. But that's just bad luck."
    Financially stable

Sullivan and Gold took control of the club from Icelandic firm CB Holdings in January 2010 and he concedes the club's finances would have put off most potential owners.
However, he is determined to ensure the club becomes a Premier League force in the short-term, with the long-term aim of becoming financially stable once more.
"As a business venture it made no sense at all," he added. "Not the deal we did.
"The club was 120m in debt with very few assets. It was a mess. I knew, when the Icelandics were signing the players they were for the money they were paying, it made no financial sense

"But David and I are not in it for the money. We don't want to go bust either. The aim is to make the club self-sufficient. But we want to put the best possible team on the pitch for the supporters of West Ham because we are supporters too.
"Because of the mess we inherited we have to service a 100m debt. There are commitments that have to be paid and we have to pay interest on the debt. But we also had to put the money in to put together a team that would get us promoted.

"David and I are not in it for the money. We don't want to go bust either. The aim is to make the club self-sufficient. But we want to put the best possible team on the pitch for the supporters of West Ham because we are supporters too."
David Sullivan Quotes of the week
"So we are spending capital. Spending our life savings. There is no point kidding ourselves.
"Now, if the king of Saudi Arabia wants to buy West Ham we would happily step aside for the good of the club. But we wouldn't step aside for a mystery foreign buyer whose financial resources we have no knowledge of."
    Stadium

Sullivan feels one way out of West Ham's financial predicament could be a move to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.
The Hammers were originally awarded the right to take over the ownership of the stadium last year, but the deal collapsed following legal challenges by Tottenham and Leyton Orient.
They are now one of four formal bidders to become tenants of stadium in a revised bidding process, with Sullivan convinced West Ham have the best bid both for the club and the Olympic legacy.

"Now we obviously want to move to the Olympic Stadium," he added.
"For three years we've been trying to secure it. We believe we have the best bid. We will make football affordable to all because we will have the seats to do deals, and we will make the whole stadium economically viable.
"We will embrace the athletics legacy and make it a brilliant, multi-purpose facility."
