Canal+ has officially entered French DTT FTA market with its D8 channel, formerly Direct 8 owned by Bolloré Media.
The pay-TV firm believes that it will now benefit from a budget three times than its direct competitors. Canal+ also took over music channel Direct Star, re-named D17.
The launch programme offered was US movie Million Dollar Baby and the station plans to broadcast other awarded feature films, as well as sport and high quality TV series. However, D8 is not authorised to broadcast more than one US series in a week during three years, and need to observe a 18 month delay before broadcasting Canal+’s original creations after first run on the pay-TV channel.
Competitors welcome the new player’s arrival as a stimulating event that will push them to invest more into programmes. TF1, M6 and France Télévisions are more worried though.
