ETB to invest $1BN on network upgrade

In order to be able to launch IPTV services in the first half of 2013, Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogota (ETB) has allocated $1 billion dollars on upgrading its networks in Colombia.

The project will involve an initial investment of $50 million to launch TV services over the Internet in the first half of 2013, but that in order to establish an interactive IP platform the firsm has to upgrade all of its networks Bogotá, migrating from copper to fibre optics.

The state telco, controlled by the Mayor of Bogotá which has 88.4% of assets, was licensed to provide service enables subscription TV via the Internet in 2009, but the local financial situation spanning several years, have so far prevented the service start trading.

Since 2011, ETB has been trying to develop a pay-TV industry, has considered a strategic service to become more competitive and grow in a very competitive market.

In April 2012, ETB April entered the mobile phone market, in the form of a virtual mobile operator, with an integrated offer of quadruple play services.
