ARD plans catch-up navigation through smartphone

German public broadcaster ARD wants to offer users of its catch-up TV service ARD Mediathek the possibility to navigate through the service with their smartphone or tablet-PC in future.
With the move, ARD reacts to the increasing usage of mobile devices in parallel to TV consumption. Smartphone and tablet-PC thereby act as interactive multimedia remote controls: On the small screen, videos can be selected, started and watched on the large TV screen on the regular TV set.
The second screen application "ARD.connect" which was developed in collaboration with Munich-based research institute IRT will be shown as a test version during the upcoming media conference Medientage München from 24 to 26 October 2012 at the IRT booth.
To access ARD Mediathek on the TV screen, a TV set or set-top-box is required compliant with interactive multimedia standard HbbTV and connected to the internet.
