German multimedia service provider NetRange will transmit the qualification games of the football World Cup 2014 for the owners of connected TV sets.

The Hamburg-based company has secured the exclusive international live distribution rights for the new over-the-top (OTT) transmission method.

Through the "Qualifiers 2014" app, more than 140 matches will be screened from now on. Following the live-stream, all games can be watched on-demand. In total, 50% of the European matches from the qualification rounds will be transmitted via OTT including the games of the national teams of current Euro and World Cup holders Spain as well as France, Italy, Croatia, Poland and Russia.

The "Qualifiers 2014" app is available on the smart TV portals of all internet-compliant TV sets from the manufacturers Loewe, Sharp, Thomson and Ikea as well as on all other connected TV sets equipped with NetRange portals.

"By offering this completely new form of football broadcasting, we are breaking new ground in the exploitation of media and sports rights - and may even make television history" said Jan Wendt, managing director of NetRange.
