From David Del Valle in Madrid

Spain’s digital DTH platform Canal Plus, owned by media group Prisa TV, lost 50,785 TV subscribers over the course of 12 months, leaving 1,723,530 as of September 30th 2012. The company blamed “the weak economic situation and the increase of the VAT”.

With an ARPU of €42 in the third quarter, Canal Plus is failing to reduce its churn rate of 14.7 per cent. Nevertheless, the company increased its total revenues by 4.2 per cent to €788.12 million and its EBITDA by 16.4 per cent to €172.45 million.

Thirty-three per cent of its subscribers (577,986) are iPlus clients.
