Côte Ouest Audiovisuel (Ivory Coast), a leading African distributor, has inked a strategic agreement with two players from Brazil: TV Globo International and the Brazilian Association of Independent TV Producers (ABPI TV).
While Côte Ouest already had an agreement with TV Globo International, being the exclusive distributor in Africa and French-speaking countries outside France, the alliance was strengthened during the 2012 Discop Africa. The event (which ran from 31 October to 2 November in South Africa) saw both companies promoting Brazilian content and exploring new opportunities for Brazilian and African producers.
Both companies organized a series of activities, such as the private networking dinner When Brazil Meets Africa with participation from the Minister of Arts and Culture of South Africa, Paul Mashitile, and the Brazilian ambassador, Pedro Carneiro de Mendonça.
The soap opera megastar Taís Araújo was part of the Brazilian delegation. TV Globo International’s productions include The Colour of Sin and Living Life Cobras and Lizards, which is due to debut via the South African operator M-Net. Côte Ouest also organized a cocktail event to promote interaction between TV companies and African Brazilian producers.
During the event Mike Dearham, Côte Ouest group SVP and general manager of the Mauritius office, Leticia NCHO, general manager of Côte Ouest French business, and Daniel Djajah, recently appointed head of Globo TV International Sales, discussed the success of the telenovela in the Content is King, Telenovelas Rule seminar.
Bernard Azria, CEO of Côte Ouest, said: “The African channels have an appetite for the high quality content of Brazilian industry, especially the telenovela”, while Rachel do Valle, executive director Brazilian TV Producers (BTVP), said: “It’s our first Discop Africa and the Côte Ouest match marks an important milestone for our producers in the African market".
