French Minister of Culture and Communication Aurélie Filipetti has stated that scripted reality television shows, mixing drama and reality TV, are not welcome on public TV screens.
This comes two years after France 2 launched the scripted reality show Le Jour où tout a basculé, in which stories are based upon real facts. This season, France 3 has followed with the programme Si Près de chez vous. Scripted reality, which is seen as low-cost and low-quality fiction, is also developing quickly on private nets.
Some drama producers fear that such low-cost programming might cause an overall decrease of dramas. The TV regulatory body CSA is expected to make a decision upon the status of scripted reality TV this month.
