Microsoft takes IPTV leadership in MRG survey

New research from Multimedia Research Group (MRG) has identified Microsoft as the global leader in terms of key elements in the business of IPTV.

The IPTV Market Leader Report by Product and Region — Fall 2012 report set out to identify which IPTV systems and software companies are leading six IPTV market segments, namely access systems, video head-end systems (VHE), video-on-demand (VOD) server software, set-top boxes (STBs), middleware (MW), and content protection and digital rights management (CP/DRM).

In assessing who was driving the IPTV industry, MRG revealed Microsoft as the only company to lead in more than one category on a global basis. By product segment, Huawei was shown as claiming leadership in three of the six categories in Asia Pacific and to be gaining traction in Middle East/Africa - the scene of most of the changes taking place in leadership for the IPTV market. Conditional access firm Verimatrix topped four of the six geographic regions, Alcatel-Lucent also topped four and Harmonic two. In North America, Google-Motorola was the big winner, leading in three categories.

“IPTV is continuing its rapid growth worldwide but some of the more exciting opportunities are only just beginning in the Middle East/Africa and Latin America/Caribbean regions,” said Jose Alvear, senior research analyst at MRG. “While the growth in the number of new IPTV service providers has been slowing down because telcos around the world have already deployed IPTV services for a number of years, there are still plenty of new opportunities available to vendors in emerging markets. In addition, vendors are now supplying multiscreen, content delivery and OTT services, as the global pay-TV industry continues to evolve into new screens and devices.”
